The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today (14) that the Attorney General will not appear on behalf of the police officers including the Theldeniya Police Station Commander in the fundamental rights petition filed by a young man regarding the incident of pouring Nai chili on the penis of a suspect arrested by the Theldeniya Police.
As this is a very serious incident, the Attorney General has decided not to appear on behalf of the respondent police officers and informed the Attorney General.Deputy Solicitor General Madhava Thennakone, who represented the Attorney General, said that he is only representing the Attorney General who has been named as a respondent in this fundamental rights petition.
The petition was heard before the Supreme Court Judges Yasanta Kodagoda and Kumuduni Wick Ramasinghe.
In this fundamental rights petition filed by Mr. Ruwan Shanta Priyadarshana, 11 persons including the Inspector General of Police, Theldeniya Headquarters Police Inspector, and the Attorney General have been named as respondents in the petition.
The petitioner, who states that he was arrested and illegally detained and tortured by the Teldeniya police officers on January 27, 2023, has also mentioned that he has complained to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
